The category of knife types is extensive, almost limitless if you consider the past and the future. But when it comes to useful, practical knives to get and to give, there are a few main categories to consider. There are collectible or presentation type knives, often engraved, and perhaps intended mostly for display. Then there are the kitchen type knives, and those come in a bewildering assortment of styles themselves. We could classify another group as practical knives, including camping, hunting, fishing, and work or utility knives. There are more, of course, but that will cover a lot of the knife family
Practical Knives Types
In the practical group you have such specialized types as the box-cutter types with the extensible blade. They are very useful for, well, box and package opening. Some of the modern packaging would make anyone glad to have one handy. Then there are the multi-function knives, like the Swiss Army knives, with all kinds of useful little things such as a scissors, can opener, or a screwdriver. You can even get a golf knife of the multi-function sort, with a divot repair tool, ball marker, and spike wrench, not to mention the indispensable bottle opener. Among folding knives, wooden handled knives are popular, as are aluminum handled knives. The larger, sturdier of the folding type may be called hunter knives, being sturdy enough for woods work and for dressing large game.
Kitchen Knives Types
When it comes to kitchen knives the variety is amazing. The Japanese knife styles are increasingly popular. You may find yourself in position of a fine Japanese knife set by way of a promotional offering for business relationships, or perhaps just a thoughtful gift. You may admire the cool bamboo box and unique blade shapes. You may not know what the names mean when you see Yanagi knife, Usaba knife, or Deba knife, but you will find them excellent when you try them for kitchen work. Of course the fine kitchen knife set will come with paring, boning, and chef knife varieties, as it has for years and years. A deluxe set may include a ham slicer and a bread knife as well. Certainly a fine set of excellent steak knives would be a nice item to present to someone, or even to yourself. The blade material for kitchen type knives ranges from fine stainless to high-carbon steel, with reasons and benefits for each type.
Collectible & Presentation Knives Types
The collectible or presentation type knives may be any variety, really. The class is more defined by fine materials and by custom engraving. You can find very fine folding knives, with handles of rare wood or other fine materials. Such knives are sometimes engraved or laser etched, to make them more personal, presentable, and collectable. While strong and durable enough for practical purposes, these knives may be so beautiful that you will wish to keep them out for display, rather than put them to use.
Unique Knives Types
And the list goes on, with many unique types available. There is the carabiner clip type knife, which might attach to work or climbing gear. There is a thing called a survival card, which is a sort of multi-tool in one compact piece of metal. Among kitchen varieties there are the half moon shaped two-handled rocking types, like the Japanese mincing knife or the Italian mezzaluna blade. There are a number of specialized and interesting Japanese kitchen knives, often associated with sushi preparation.
